Enabling every child to be a thinker
Enabling every child to be a thinker
Cogitation : (n) to think deeply, to ponder!
Thinking is a foundational skill for us to make sense of the world. Thinking is what enables us to reflect on the past, make sense of the present and plan the future. Thinking helps us evaluate ourselves and build self-awareness. In education, thinking is vitally connected with learning by driving cognition and metacognition.
Thinking skills are of myriad types – critical, creative, problem solving, perspective taking, decision & judgement making to name a few. Research shows that thinking is not an innate or inborn ability – but can be cultivated through the right learning experiences. Unfortunately, the schooling system with extensive syllabi and overloaded schedules is unable to create spaces for teaching thinking.
At our school, Al Qamar Academy, we worked intentionally to cultivate independent thinking in our students. We carefully crafted best practices which would infuse thinking into everything the students did – from creating their plans for scientific research, brainstorming a business plan, grappling with math problems or writing a brilliant story. These practices were ‘invisible’ so as to speak, but their impact was very visible to the wider community, curriculum experts and national educational bodies.
We now bring this suite of best practices into Cogitation Club. Our school level offerings include Book authoring programs, the Thinking Thru the Year suite and one-off programs. Our year long programs and customized workshops are also offered as school partnerships.
