In this workshop, participants will meet 5 ordinary Indians who did extraordinary things. From organizing food delivery in a Covid lockdown, working with underprivileged kids in rural schools, innovating education to break the shackles of “traditional” learning to interacting with jail inmates to provide emotional support. Children will traverse through India with these seasoned educators from diverse backgrounds, weaving through many an unusual path, pausing to view spectacular sights, participating in thought provoking discussions and activities to develop a nuanced appreciation of the complexity of Indian lives.
*Profiles of Speakers:*
ROHIT KUMAR is an author and freelance journalist. His book Tales from the Tihar is a collection of fascinating stories collected during his work with the inmates. Rohit also writes for The Wire . He is also an educator who has spent the last 25 years helping to make classrooms emotionally safe spaces for school students.
NIKHAT UMM KHADEEJAH, a serial entrepreneur and a growth coach, was very active during the pandemic and did a food drive for stranded labourers and was able to raise funds and deliver 1.2 million meals throughout Mumbai. She specializes in social media strategy and regularly conducts workshops on the same. Currently she is managing operations at Idafa Investments, a financial advisory firm.
SRIRAM NANGANATHAN has been closely associated as a resource person with Ignus, a group of professionals working to improve the quality of education for marginalized children across India at elementary and secondary levels. He is a Core Team Member of ThinQ, a collective that creates curriculum and educational materials aimed at promoting inquiry, critical thinking and deep understanding across knowledge domains.
K. RAMNATH CHANDRASEKHAR is a practitioner with 13 years of experience in conceptualising and implementing experiential education programs for schools in the Asia-Pacific region. As a trained photographer and filmmaker, Ram has traveled across India to produce stories that have inspired people to speak for India’s natural and cultural heritage.
ANEESA JAMAL is an alumna of Smith College, USA & an MBA from the University of Washington. She founded Al Qamar Academy, an innovative micro-school in Chennai India. Prior to Al Qamar, she worked with multinationals like Microsoft, AT&T, Modi Xerox & Price Waterhouse. She has been teaching creative writing for 11 years. Her students have published books, participated in international creative writing events and won national awards. She also conducts training and workshops for educators.
